VIBES winners story: CMS Window Systems

VIBES logoTaking steps to be more sustainable can be hard work for organisations, but it opens up opportunities to share your challenges with others, and be praised and rewarded for taking the leap of faith. The Vision In Business for the Environment of Scotland (VIBES) is one of those opportunities. Entrants for the 2016 awards are being sought now and here a previous winner tells how winning has helped their business.

CMS Window Systems, winner of the VIBES Management small to medium sized enterprises (SME) award 2015, is a UK company designing, manufacturing and installing PVCu, aluminium and timber composite windows, doors and curtain walling from manufacturing and recycling facilities in North Lanarkshire and Fife.

CMS was one of the first window companies to remove all extracted waste from site. The waste is transported and sorted at one of its two dedicated recycling plants for onward processing. This is a labour intensive process but helps the company achieve impressive recycling rates and control recovered material quality.

One of its great successes is its CMS Innovation Hub which opened in 2014 and is a unique centre dedicated to improving collaboration and sharing best practice, amongst the supply chain and customers, about sustainable construction. The Hub showcases energy efficient building products and practices and is a working model of building improvement solutions.

Martin McCrimmon, business systems director at CMS Window Systems, said: “It is a great honour to win the VIBES Management award. Since our inception in 2006, we knew we could do things differently and better in a way that would benefit all stakeholders – our customers, our employees and the local communities in which we operate, whilst having minimal negative impact on the environment.”

“We recognised that by setting up our business and operating it in a way that other manufacturers could only aspire to, required a clear strategy from the outset that considered the environmental and energy impact of every aspect of how our business runs.”

Sarah Wilson, Marketing Manager at CMS Window Systems added: “The VIBES application process is a great way to assess the environmental, economic and social sustainability of your business. We think applying every 3-5 years enables us to check that we are still on the right track”
