Businesses are still being encouraged to apply for the 2016 Vision in business for the environment of Scotland (VIBES) awards. We’ve been speaking to past winners to get a feel for what benefits they felt VIBES gave them in their business place.
Winners of the VIBES awards in 2010 and 2013, Vegware is an example of how a micro company can make an environmental product into a great business opportunity.
They develop, manufacture and distribute a full range of compostable food packaging and catering disposables. The products are plastic-free, low-carbon, made from recycled or renewable plant materials and all are suitable for recycling along with food waste after use.
They are extremely conscious of waste and resources issues within foodservice and use their expertise to advise other businesses within the industry on best practice for food waste recycling.
Eilidh Brunton, recycling consultant at Vegware said: “We won the VIBES Waste and Resources Award in 2013. Beyond our completely compostable catering disposables, the judges were particularly impressed by our additional services helping businesses to go zero waste, like our free food waste matchmaking service. Winning a VIBES Award is a huge independent seal of approval, hard won after half a day’s grilling by three judges, and against extremely stiff competition. Scotland is leading the UK in affecting real environmental change and we are delighted to be part of the booming green economy.”
Beyond being a recognition of their work, VIBES has brought some network benefits. An example is their relation with Bay Fish and Chips, another VIBES winner who is now benefitting from Vegware products, with both environmental benefits and quality benefits as they discovered that their chips are not soggy in this kind of packaging. Both these businesses were runners up in the last European Business Awards for the Environment, giving the company wider market exposure. Through its accreditation, VIBES is a feeder scheme for these awards.
Lucy Frankel Vegware’s Communications Director, added: “VIBES is a great way to assess the work your business does. We found it beneficial to go through the rigorous application and judging process. The feedback is very informative and helped us to improve our work as an environmental business.”
