Many Scottish businesses see the commercial benefits that top class environmental performance can generate. As planetary constraints become more severe as the 21st century progresses, this will increasingly be essential for all businesses. Those businesses already doing so need to be publicly recognised. This is why the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has partnered the Scottish Business Awards to support the ‘One Planet Award’ at this year’s award ceremony on 17 November.
SEPA‘s ‘One Planet Award’ recognises that Scotland’s business sectors can be a powerful driver for delivering an inclusive and low carbon economy and looks to celebrate the achievements that sees Scotland deliver when it comes to protecting the ‘One Planet’ on which we live.
The SEPA ‘One Planet’ award, named from the SEPA “One Planet Prosperity – Our Regulatory Strategy”, features for the first time this year, and the eight finalists were announced this week (10 October 2016). The judging panel have the task of judging the finalists on:
- Key Challenges: Recognition by the company of the key issues, challenges and constraints required to tackle climate change and to ensure environmental protection.
- Opportunities: Recognition of the opportunities for profit that arise from these challenges and the creation of a strategy to profit from sustainable activity.
- Sector leadership: Evidence of outstanding leadership within their sector in delivering a “One Planet” approach and the creation of an example for others to follow.
Terry A’Hearn, SEPA’s Chief Executive said:
“This is the first time we’ve supported the Scottish Business Awards ‘One Planet Award’ and we’re pleased to have such a range of businesses included as finalists. Being a finalist, and potentially the winner, of the award shows that in the 21st century, businesses who recognise the need to live within our planets resources and who see opportunities for profitability through environmental innovation will be successful.
“By identifying where individual businesses and industry can go beyond compliance, Scotland has the unique opportunity to set the trend on a global scale. Whilst many countries look to develop a Circular Economy, SEPA’s One Planet approach is leading the way by creating the regulatory framework for businesses to go beyond compliance. There are huge economic incentives for pushing beyond basic compliance. As pressure on our current resources becomes greater, it will ultimately be businesses that are more sustainable that will continue to thrive, helping to create more lasting and inclusive growth in Scotland.”
The Scottish Business Awards is the UK’s most anticipated calendar event for the Scottish business community. Last year’s Scottish Business Awards broke the record for attendance at a business event, attracting 2100 business leaders who represented over 400 companies, 300,000 employees and £100bn in turnover. The key note speaker at this year’s event is Leonardo DiCaprio. An actor, producer and environmental activist, he is well known for his dedication to protecting our environment on a global scale.
The finalists for the One Planet Award are:
- Keenan Recycling
- Keep Scotland Beautiful
